Four Pillars Combatives — Self-Defense Curriculum

AWARENESS.
CONTACT MANAGEMENT.
RESPOND.
GET HOME SAFE.

Our approach follows four priorities: be aware of potential danger, manage contact and establish boundaries, respond appropriately if necessary, and leave as soon as it is safe. The goal is always to get home safely.

Our guiding approach

FROM AWARENESS TO GETTING HOME SAFE.

These are our guiding priorities. The four curriculum sections below teach the skills that support them.

01

AWARENESS

Recognize developing problems and avoid unnecessary danger.

02

CONTACT MANAGEMENT

Maintain space, set verbal boundaries, manage positioning, and find an exit.

03

RESPOND

If you must defend yourself—including when an attacker strikes first or you lose the initiative—protect yourself, regain the ability to act, and leave as soon as it is safe.

04

GET HOME SAFE

Disengage and leave as soon as it is safe to do so.

Four interconnected sections

THE CURRICULUM.

Our four curriculum sections contain the training topics and specialties we teach. They are not separate membership plans or standalone weekly classes. Choose a lesson or event format to study the appropriate topics.

01

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS

Recognize developing problems, avoid unnecessary confrontations, and manage contact before an encounter becomes physical. Situational Awareness & Contact Management is part of this section, not a separate course.

  • Environmental Awareness: Observe surroundings, exits, unusual behavior, and possible danger.
  • Contact Awareness & Management (CAM): Manage distance, positioning, movement, communication, and verbal boundaries.
  • Taking the Initiative: Make appropriate, lawful decisions when escape is not safely possible.
  • Responding When the Attacker Acts First: Address surprise attacks and situations where you lose the initiative. Protect yourself, manage position and distance, and regain the opportunity to escape.

Women's self-defense considerations—including recognizing warning signs, setting boundaries, and seeking safe exits—are integrated into this section and throughout the curriculum.

02

EMPTY-HAND FIGHTING

Survive a physical confrontation with striking and grappling skills, including situations where an attacker acts first or takes the initiative. Prioritize mobility, weapon awareness, protection, regaining position, and escape. MMA and combat sports instruction is available through private lessons and seminars only.

  • Striking: Practical boxing, Muay Thai, and MMA striking fundamentals adapted to self-defense.
  • Clinch Fighting: Wrestling, positioning, balance, controls, and creating opportunities to disengage.
  • Ground Fighting: Ground survival, escapes, getting back to your feet, and Weapons-Based Ground Fighting when weapons may be present.
  • Multiple-Attacker Fighting: Movement, positioning, and disengagement in complex encounters.

Weapons-Based Entanglement (WBE) connects this section to Weapons Fighting by addressing clinch, wrestling, and ground situations where a weapon may be present or accessible.

03

WEAPONS FIGHTING

Develop awareness, decision-making, and control around weapons in real-world self-defense. Eskrima, firearms safety, and weapons-based grappling are integrated here rather than offered as separate weekly classes.

  • Defense Against Armed Threats: Early recognition, avoidance, protection, and escape.
  • In-Fight Weapons Access: Understand how close-range entanglement affects access to a defensive weapon.
  • Weapon Retention: Protect and maintain control of your own weapon.
  • Opponent Weapon Access & Control: Recognize and respond to attempted weapon access.
  • Defensive Weapons Application: Responsible, lawful decision-making involving firearms, knives, impact tools, and improvised objects, including Eskrima principles.

Weapons-Based Entanglement and Weapons-Based Ground Fighting connect this section with Empty-Hand Fighting; they are integrated curriculum topics, not additional curriculum sections.

04

FITNESS & ATTRIBUTES TRAINING

Build the physical qualities that support self-defense and improve training performance. Combative Fitness & Attributes Training belongs in this section; one-on-one personal training is a separate way to book coaching.

  • Strength & Power: Develop usable strength and force production.
  • Cardiovascular Conditioning: Build endurance and repeat-effort capacity.
  • Mobility & Physical Resilience: Improve movement quality and general durability.
  • Combative Attributes: Improve timing, distance, balance, coordination, agility, and speed.
Training priority: Avoid a fight if possible. Establish boundaries. Leave when you can do so safely. Physical skills are a last-resort part of a bigger self-defense plan.
